Attorney General Jay Jones announced on April 15 that Virginians should be aware of the process for reporting housing discrimination, as part of Fair Housing Month. Residents who believe they have experienced discrimination can file a free complaint with the Virginia Fair Housing Office without needing a lawyer.

The announcement aims to inform the public about their rights and how to seek help if they face barriers to fair housing. The Attorney General’s office supports civil rights enforcement and victim assistance programs, according to the official website.

“The law protects Virginians in every step of the housing journey. My office will bring those who have been found to block equal access with discriminatory actions to court on behalf of the hardworking people of the Commonwealth,” said Attorney General Jay Jones.

Liz Hayes, Director of the Fair Housing Office, said, “The Virginia Fair Housing Office is committed to conducting thorough impartial investigations of housing discrimination complaints. Our goal is to ensure the Boards and the Office of the Attorney General have the information needed to make informed decisions and pursue enforcement, when necessary.”

After a complaint is filed, investigators review documents and records and conduct interviews with all parties involved. The investigation seeks to determine whether there is reasonable cause to believe that discrimination has occurred or may occur. Findings are then presented at meetings of either the Fair Housing Board or Real Estate Board for further action. If discrimination is confirmed by these boards, cases are brought before a court by the Attorney General’s office on behalf of both complainants and members of the public.

Remedies can include monetary compensation for victims, civil penalties paid to Virginia, punitive damages meant as deterrents, as well as non-monetary measures such as policy changes or training requirements. In certain situations involving patterns or matters deemed important for public interest, cases may be taken directly by the Attorney General’s office without going through initial board review.

The Attorney General provides legal counsel and representation for state agencies while promoting public safety and defending constitutional rights as detailed on its official website. The office also addresses issues like human trafficking and domestic violence through legal advocacy according to its website, offers consumer protection resources including identity theft support as noted online, and serves all residents across Virginia according to its official statements.

Miyares holds position as 48th Attorney General in Virginia according to state records.
