Attorney General Jay Jones announced on April 11 a summary of his office’s recent efforts, including legal action against a federal executive order on elections, recognition of Fair Housing Month, and participation in Wear Teal Day to support survivors of sexual violence.
These initiatives reflect the Attorney General’s ongoing role in defending the rights of Virginians and addressing issues such as civil rights enforcement and victim assistance programs, according to the official website.
Jones said he is suing the Trump administration over an executive order that he described as illegal and harmful to state authority over elections. “Voter suppression tactics have taken many different forms over the course of many generations. I am the grandson of people who were very present and prominent in the civil rights movement here in Virginia—people who gave their all to make sure that descendants like me had the right to vote. I sit across the dinner table from family members who were denied the right to vote simply because of the color of their skin.” He also said, “I’m proud to join attorneys general across the country in defending the right to the franchise and to use every legal tool available to us to stop the president’s illegal power grab.”
In addition, Jones recognized National Fair Housing Month by honoring civil rights leaders involved with passing fair housing legislation. He affirmed his commitment: “Attorney General Jay Jones will continue this fight and guard protections for all Virginians.” The Attorney General provides legal counsel for state agencies while promoting public safety and defending constitutional rights as detailed on his office’s official website.
On April 7, Jones participated in Wear Teal Day alongside his staff. “My office stands ready to support survivors of sexual assault with resources and information to help them through the healing process and in seeking justice. Thank you to everyone participating in today’s campaign in raising awareness of this critical issue.” The Attorney General addresses issues including human trafficking and domestic violence through legal advocacy according to information from his official website.
Looking ahead, Jones will deliver a keynote address at Norfolk State University’s spring commencement on May 9. As noted by his office online, services such as consumer protection resources are also provided statewide by serving all residents throughout Virginia.
