Attorney General Jay Jones has taken legal steps to pause an appeal in the case Virginia State Air Pollution Control Board, et al., v. Association of Energy Conservation Professionals. This action could allow Virginia to rejoin the Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative (RGGI).

The decision aims to reverse actions by the previous administration that withdrew Virginia from RGGI. The withdrawal had ended funding for energy efficiency programs, flood protection, and affordable housing development.

“Today, the Commonwealth reopened the door for participation in RGGI, which we know lowers costs for the most vulnerable Virginians while holding industries accountable to transition to cleaner, more stable, and more affordable sources of energy,” said Attorney General Jay Jones. “I am proud to have taken steps to correct course and set the Commonwealth back on a path toward long-term affordability and resilience.”

Attorney General Jones also stated that this filing is part of broader efforts to undo policies from the prior administration and ensure that Virginia’s energy decisions are based on affordability, evidence, and public interest.

The Office of the Attorney General of Virginia provides legal counsel and representation to state entities and serves communities across the state through consumer protection services, civil rights support, and victim aid programs. The office addresses issues such as human trafficking and fraud while upholding public safety and constitutional rights as described on its official website. The Attorney General also operates within Richmond at 202 North 9th Street.
