Prince William County issued the following announcement on Dec. 22
The Prince William Board of County Supervisors recently commended Maj. Dawn Harman for 30 years of service to the Prince William County Police Department.
Harman, who grew up in Prince William County and graduated from Gar-Field High School, has the distinction of being the first woman in the department to serve as Assistant Chief.
During her time with the Police Department, Harman served in many assignments including Patrol, Accreditation, Support Services, Operations, Crime Prevention and Animal Control where she served as Director of the Prince William County Animal Control Bureau.
Harman, who holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Animal and Veterinary Science, joined the Department as a Deputy Animal Warden and was promoted to Police Officer in 1994. She was promoted to Major in 2014.
Throughout her career, Harman made it her mission to mentor and develop the next generation of leaders to continue the Department’s success, made a positive impact in each position she held, and looked for ways to improve and help the Department provide quality services to the community.
Harman’s “professionalism and commitment to service have left a lasting impact on the Police Department and the citizens of Prince William County,” according to the commendation.
Harman’s husband Mark is a retired member of the Police Department. They have four children. Two of them carry on the family tradition and serve as members of the Police Department.
