City Announcement: Implementation of Red Light Safety Camera Program
0Comments

The City of Manassas Park is dedicated to keeping its community safe. In order to do so, the City of Manassas Park implemented a red-light safety camera program. The purpose of this program is to increase traffic safety in the city by reducing red-light running violations, collisions, and injuries.

Cameras will begin taking photos of red-light runners at Centreville Road and Manassas Drive beginning on March 16, 2022. Red-light safety cameras will capture still images and video of red-light running violations. During a 30-day warning period, a warning notice will be issued to the vehicle’s registered owner. There will be no fine for this warning notice. At the completion of the warning period, April 15, 2022, citations with a $50 fine will be issued.

The use of road safety cameras in Virginia was authorized under the State Statute, Virginia Code 15.2-968.1, use of photo-monitoring systems to enforce traffic light signals and the City of Manassas Park Ordinance § 24-42, use of photo-monitoring systems to enforce traffic light signals.

•What is a red-light running violation?

A red-light running violation occurs when a motorist enters an intersection after the traffic signal has turned red. This violation is a non-moving infraction and does not result in the assessment of points against the driver.

•Where are the Red-Light Safety Cameras located?

The intersection(s) with camera(s) are listed below. Each intersection is marked clearly with signs to alert drivers that cameras are in use ahead.

• NB Centreville Road / SR 28 @ Manassas Dr/ SR 213

• SB Centreville Road / SR 28 @ Manassas Dr/ SR 213

• WB Manassas Dr/ SR 213 @ Centreville Road / SR 28

•When are the Red-Light Safety Cameras operational?

Red-light safety cameras will be operational 24/7.

•What is the fine amount for a Red-Light Running violation?

The fine amount for a red-light safety camera is $50.

•Will “points” be assessed to my driving record?

No, this citation is not considered a “moving violation”. It is a civil citation holding the registered owner or lessee responsible for the violation (similar to a parking ticket.) No points can be assessed for this violation and it will not affect your insurance rates. Drivers who receive red-light safety camera violations are cited for red-light violations only.

•How does the Red-Light Safety Camera work?

In Virginia, a red-light violation occurs when a vehicle has illegally entered the intersection AFTER the traffic light has turned red. It is not a violation if the vehicle has already entered the intersection prior to the signal turning red. Vehicles entering the intersection after the light turns red are detected automatically and two photographs are taken—one prior to entering the intersection and one showing the vehicle continuing through the intersection- with the light in the red phase. Violation data is recorded directly to the encrypted digital images and indicates the location, date, and time of the violation, as well as the duration the light was yellow and red prior to the violation. The Manassas Park Police Department reviews each incident before a citation is issued. The citation will contain images of the vehicle and a close-up of the license plate.
