County Yard Waste Collection Program Resumes March 1

County of Prince William issued the following announcement on March 3

In December 2020, the Prince William Board of County Supervisors unanimously approved changes to Chapter 22 (Refuse) of the County Code.  This code change included a new curbside yard waste collection program.  The yard waste program will resume in March. Curbside yard waste collection will take place weekly, separate from trash and recycling.  To ensure collection by their private hauler, residents must place yard waste in biodegradable paper bags or containers labeled “Yard Waste”.   Plastic bags can no longer be used for yard waste collection.

Residents, businesses, apartments, landscapers, etc. are all required to arrange for a separate collection of yard waste, leaves and brush. The yard waste collection program is seasonal and will run March through December, each year. In addition to yard waste collection, Christmas trees will be collected during the first two weeks of January. Residents, HOAs and businesses may contact their trash and recycling hauler for information on yard waste collection days, provision of containers and other account specific details.

Like refuse, there is no charge to private waste haulers for yard waste delivered to the Balls Ford Road Compost Facility.  Residents may also bring yard waste to the County Landfill or Balls Ford Road in paper bags or containers, no plastic bags. Separated yard waste is made into a soil amendment product or mulch at the Balls Ford Road Compost Facility instead of being landfilled. Compost and mulch products are available for purchase by residents, landscapers, and garden centers.

Guidelines on yard waste preparation and other details on the new program are available at www.pwcva.gov/yardwaste.
