As the Fourth of July approaches, concerns about fireworks-related injuries are rising. According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission’s Fireworks Annual Report (2023), there has been a significant increase in such injuries in the United States between 2008 and 2023, with an average rise of 561 injuries annually.
Prince William County permits certain fireworks under specific restrictions. The Prince William County Fire and Rescue System advises residents to enjoy professional fireworks displays instead. Several locations within the county will host aerial displays, including Robert Trent Jones Golf Club on June 28th, Evergreen Country Club on July 3rd, Sweet Virginia Farm on July 5th, and Dumfries Independence Day Celebration on July 6th.
For those who choose to purchase fireworks, the Fire Marshal’s Office recommends buying from approved stands within the county. A list of permissible fireworks and approved stands is available at pwcva.gov/department/fire-marshals-office/permissible-fireworks.
The Fire Marshal’s Office offers safety tips for using fireworks: they should be handled by adults only and used outdoors in open spaces away from spectators and flammable materials. It is important not to dispose of them in buildings or combustible containers. Spent fireworks should be soaked in water before disposal.
Permissible consumer fireworks in Prince William County include fountains, wheels, crackling devices, flashers or strobes that meet specific safety criteria. Many fireworks sold online or from other states are illegal in Virginia; possession of these is prohibited.
Residents possessing unauthorized fireworks can contact the Prince William County Fire Marshal’s Office for safe disposal without fear of fines or summonses.
