The Prince William County Police Department is collaborating with G&C Tire & Auto Service to offer a free catalytic converter etching service for residents of Prince William County. The event will take place at G&C Tire & Auto Service, located at 11707 Pump Station Way in Manassas, on Saturday, June 28, 2025, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.
To participate in the etching service, vehicle owners must bring a valid driver’s license and current vehicle registration as only registered owners can authorize the procedure.
Catalytic converter thefts have been increasing due to the high demand and value of the precious metals contained within them. Thieves can remove converters quickly using battery-operated saws, often targeting auto-body shops, commuter lots, and apartment complexes during late night or early morning hours.
Engraving or labeling catalytic converters with acid etching and high-temperature paint may deter thieves and assist in tracing stolen converters back to their original vehicles. The Police Department advises community members to consider such measures or attend events like this one. Additionally, they are working with local recyclers and scrap yards to track those selling catalytic converters.
Certain vehicles are more frequently targeted for these thefts, including Ford and Chevrolet full-size passenger vans, box trucks and commercial vans; as well as the Toyota Prius which has two catalytic converters. In Virginia, tampering with or removing a catalytic converter is classified as a Class 6 felony. Further charges may include a Class 1 misdemeanor for tampering with any part of a vehicle.
