Prince William County is mourning the loss of Gainesville District Supervisor Bob Weir, who passed away on July 20, 2025. Weir had served as the Gainesville District Supervisor since February 2023 and was previously a member of the Haymarket Town Council.
“Bob was someone who fought for the people he represented and stood up for what he believed in,” said Board of County Supervisors Chair At-Large Deshundra Jefferson. “He was a man of fierce conviction and integrity who didn’t suffer fools gladly. Bob and I sometimes sparred, but I respected him deeply because I knew that he always had the best interest of others at heart. He loved our community, and he loved his role as the Gainesville supervisor. Our thoughts are with his family and friends during this very difficult time.”
County Executive Chris Shorter expressed sorrow over Weir’s passing, stating, “We are deeply saddened by the passing of Supervisor Weir. He served the people of the Gainesville/Haymarket area for more than two decades, and his dedication and service to our community left a lasting impact. His commitment to public service will not be forgotten.”
The Office of Supervisor Bob Weir announced that he died from Metastatic Colon cancer. The statement described him as a devoted husband, father, and public servant who graduated from the University of Virginia.
Weir spent most of his life in Virginia and raised three children with his wife Diane in Gainesville District. His career began on the Haymarket Town Council where he became known as a thoughtful leader committed to transparency.
Weir was particularly noted for his dedication to constituent services, personally following up with residents to address their concerns.
His family has requested privacy during this time but plans to share details about services for honoring him soon.
