Ian Lovejoy, Delegate for Virginia’s 22nd House District, said that his opponent Elizabeth Guzman has remained silent for over 24 hours instead of condemning violent rhetoric from her running mate Jay Jones. The statement was released on Lovejoy’s official X account.
“It’s been over 24 hours and my opponent has remained silent,” said Lovejoy, Delegate, Virginia House of Delegates (District 22). “24 hours to condemn the violent rhetoric of her running mate, Jay Jones. Rhetoric that included fantasizing about shooting a former Speaker of the House and hoping his wife would have to experience her children dying. I call on Elizabeth Guzman to join me and denounce this rhetoric and call for Jay Jones to withdraw from his race for Attorney General.”
CBS News reports that Virginia Attorney General candidate Jay Jones is facing bipartisan backlash after text messages surfaced showing him fantasizing about shooting a Republican House Speaker and referencing harm to his children. Political leaders from both parties condemned the messages as “violent” and “unacceptable,” urging Jones to withdraw from the race.
According to the Virginia State Police’s 2024 Annual Crime Analysis Report, violent crime across the Commonwealth decreased by 6.7% compared to the previous year, while property crimes dropped by 3.5%. The report also noted that firearm-related offenses remain a continuing area of concern, prompting renewed focus on violence prevention and community engagement initiatives.
Polling conducted by WTKR and Mason-Dixon Research in September 2025 found that public safety and trust in leadership ranked among the top concerns for Virginia voters, with 74% saying civility in politics has worsened in recent years. The same poll showed heightened voter interest in accountability and transparency among state-level candidates.
