Prince William County Parks and Recreation has been active with several improvement projects across the county, focusing on trail expansions, new amenities, and facility upgrades.
Construction is underway on the Cotton Mill Drive Trail expansion at Lake Ridge Park. The project will add about 2,400 feet of 10-foot-wide asphalt trail along Cotton Mill Drive. Once finished, this trail will connect the park entrance to both the golf course and marina. Additional work includes stormwater drainage improvements, pedestrian crosswalks, a sidewalk linking the new trail to the golf course and pro shop, and a gravel extension connecting the playground to the new trail.
At Rollins Ford Park, Prince William’s first public pump track has been completed with support from fundraising by the PWC Parks Foundation. The pump track will officially open on November 15 after a ribbon-cutting ceremony scheduled for 10 a.m.
Describing pump tracks, officials noted they are made of asphalt circuits with hills and banked turns that serve riders of all ages and abilities. “These tracks are popular for children learning to ride on pedal-less balance bikes, but also cater to youth and adult riders using standard bikes. As riders improve their skills, the tracks are designed to provide the option for more challenges with increased speed and skill, without needing to change the construction. Bicycle pump tracks ensure biking is a sport that can be enjoyed by anyone, regardless of age or ability.”
Shenandoah Park in Manassas is set for improvements through collaboration with Friends of Horticulture Therapy organization which raised funds for a horticulture therapy project. Planned features include improved entry drive and parking areas, an outdoor shelter or pavilion suitable for classes, accessible walkways, and raised bed gardens.
Officials described horticulture therapy as “a form of therapy that uses gardening and plant-based activities to improve physical, mental, and social well-being.” They added: “It offers a wide range of benefits, including improved mental and physical health, enhanced social skills, and greater cognitive function. It can reduce stress and symptoms of depression and anxiety while physical activities like digging and planting improve balance endurance and motor skills.”
Renovations at Chinn Aquatics & Fitness Center are nearing completion with pool work expected to finish by December 1. This project involves replacing the pool’s bulkhead along with routine preventative maintenance.
