Susan Washington has been named Director of the Office of Human Resources for Prince William County, effective December 20, 2025. The appointment follows a national search and comes after Washington served as Acting Director since March 2025.
Washington has over 28 years of experience in human resources, including more than 14 years with Prince William County. Before her role as Acting Director, she was Assistant Director of the office, overseeing benefits, shared services, training, and administration and budget. Her previous roles include HR leadership positions with the governments of the District of Columbia and Arlington and experience in consulting and private-sector organizations.
As director, Washington will manage a team of 39 professionals responsible for recruitment, policy development, performance management, and organizational development for county employees. She will oversee hiring processes; develop HR policies; lead training initiatives; manage employee benefits; ensure compliance with labor laws at all levels; promote an inclusive workplace culture; and advise on HR matters.
County Executive Chris Shorter stated: “Susan’s deep knowledge of the organization, her extensive HR expertise and her commitment to public service made her the clear choice for this role. We are confident that under her leadership, the Office of Human Resources will continue to innovate and provide exceptional support to county employees and departments.”

Washington holds an Associate Degree in Business Administration, a Bachelor’s in Human Resource Management, a Master’s Degree from Villanova University in Human Resources Management, is a Senior Certified Professional (SHRM-SCP), Certified Public Manager, and holds senior certification from the International Public Management Association.
