Prince William County has been awarded a Bronze designation from SolSmart, recognizing its efforts to enhance solar energy accessibility. The county’s Office of Sustainability spearheaded the initiative, collaborating with Development Services and the Planning Office to simplify solar permitting processes and promote broader solar adoption initiatives.

A key element in securing this designation was the county’s implementation of SolarAPP+, an online platform that automates same-day permitting for residential rooftop solar systems. Since its launch in October 2024, SolarAPP+ has reduced delays and improved efficiency for residents and staff.

“This designation from SolSmart reinforces our commitment to making clean energy more accessible and efficient,” stated Giulia Manno, director of the county’s Office of Sustainability. “By adopting tools like SolarAPP+ and collaborating across departments, we’re creating a more streamlined experience for residents while supporting the county’s long-term climate mitigation and resiliency goals.”

The county is also enhancing solar access through public engagement by partnering with Solarize Virginia. This program offers free solar assessments, discounted pricing through bulk purchasing, and personalized installation guidance until July 15. More information can be found at pwcva.gov/department/sustainability/solarize-prince-william-county.

The Bronze designation aligns with goals in the 2025–2028 Strategic Plan for renewable energy expansion and sustainable growth. It also supports the county’s Climate Mitigation and Resiliency Goals to achieve 100 percent renewable electricity for government operations by 2030 and countywide by 2035.

“This designation reflects the county’s commitment to smart, efficient government and clean energy innovation,” said County Executive Chris Shorter. “I’m incredibly proud of our Office of Sustainability for leading this effort, and for the cross-departmental collaboration that made it possible. We’re making solar energy more accessible while improving how we serve our community.”
