Prince William County Parks and Recreation has introduced a new Therapeutic Recreation Coordinator role as part of its efforts to improve services for residents with disabilities. The department aims to expand its adapted recreation programs, ensuring that both youth and adults have equal access to classes, camps, and activities.
The newly established position is intended to help broaden the range of therapeutic and inclusive programs available. It will also provide additional support for an adapted summer camp option designed for children who require more assistance than traditional full-day camps can offer.
“We are hoping to develop more community partnerships and bring new programs and therapeutic interventions to Prince William County’s Recreation division,” said Veronica Laughman, ADA Coordinator for Prince William County Parks and Recreation.
Demi Rivera, who has been appointed as the Therapeutic Recreation Coordinator, brings extensive experience in adaptive programming. Rivera stated, “I have seen how thoughtful program design can directly impact confidence, independence and overall quality of life for people who are often overlooked.”
The current adapted programs offered by Prince William County Parks are tailored to meet the needs of individuals with disabilities. These programs are led by qualified instructors such as Special Education Teachers, Behavior Therapists, and Recreation Therapists with relevant experience. Some offerings are co-developed by a Recreation Specialist alongside a Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialist (CTRS), emphasizing inclusivity.
Rivera added, “As the Therapeutic Recreation Coordinator my position creates a dedicated focus on expanding adaptive recreation and opportunity to intentionally increase access, participation, and meaningful outcomes for individuals with disabilities. I am excited to join Prince William County Parks and Recreation to help strengthen and create spaces where our community can participate and thrive.”
