Prince William County has launched a program called Reforest PWC to address the ongoing loss of forestland due to decades of development and other environmental pressures. The initiative offers residents the opportunity to have native trees planted on their property at no cost, with both trees and labor provided by the county.
Since its start in 2023, Reforest PWC has resulted in the planting of over 44,000 trees across more than 48 acres, most of which are on private land. The county plans to expand these efforts significantly over the next decade, depending on available funding and participation from local landowners.
The program seeks suitable open land and willing property owners for reforestation projects. Eligible sites typically include half-acre or larger lots with grass or lawn areas that receive enough sunlight for new trees to grow. Participation is open to any eligible landowner in Prince William County who has adequate space.
Homeowners can benefit from reforestation through reduced maintenance costs compared to mowing large lawns. According to county estimates, maintaining several acres of grass can cost up to $12,000 annually if done by a landscaping company. Once established, forests require little ongoing care.
Other benefits highlighted by the county include improved privacy and viewsheds, increased property values, reduced noise, better water filtration, erosion prevention, and enhanced wildlife habitat. The program aims to make long-term improvements both for individual properties and for the broader community.
The application process begins with an onsite meeting with a County Arborist to assess suitability. If approved, planting is scheduled for either fall or spring. Contractors supervised by the county plant between 450 and 600 native trees per acre using a mix of deciduous and evergreen species as well as shrubs to promote ecological resilience.
Participation requires signing a Memorandum of Understanding in which landowners agree not to disturb the newly planted area but does not create a formal easement or legal restriction affecting future resale. The agreement represents a commitment to maintain the ecological investment made through the program.
