Prince William County recently organized the PER-353 Active Shooter Incident Management with Complex Incidents class, a training program developed by Texas A&M Engineering Extension Service (TEEX). The event was coordinated by the Prince William County Department of Fire & Rescue Emergency Management Team and took place at Camp Snyder in Haymarket.
The three-day course focused on the Active Shooter Incident Management (ASIM) Checklist integrated response process. It included eleven scenario-based exercises using the NIMSPro 3D Simulation System, which is designed to simulate real-life active shooter situations. The training targeted personnel from law enforcement, fire services, EMS, and dispatch centers. Both frontline responders and leaders participated to improve their ability to coordinate responses during active shooter or hostile events, including complex coordinated attacks.
According to organizers, “The goal is simple — decrease the time to neutralize the threat and get injured to a hospital.”
Representatives from several agencies attended the training. These included Alexandria Fire Department, Alexandria Police Department, Arlington County Fire Department, Arlington County Police Department, City of Manassas Police Department, Fairfax County Fire and Rescue Department, Fairfax County Police Department Helicopter Division, Fairfax County Sheriff’s Office, Lake Jackson Volunteer Fire Department, Prince William County Department of Fire and Rescue, Prince William County Department of Public Safety Communications, Prince William County Office of Emergency Management, Prince William County Police Department, and Virginia State Police.
