Prince William County Parks and Recreation is offering a variety of adapted programs designed for individuals with disabilities. These programs cater to both youth and adults, ensuring equal access to recreational activities. The offerings include classes, camps, and other activities aimed at creating an inclusive community.
The programs are led by qualified instructors such as Special Education Teachers, Behavior Therapists, and Recreation Therapists. Some initiatives are co-developed with a Recreation Specialist and a Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialist (CTRS). All programs welcome everyone.
Upcoming adaptive activities include “Adaptive Flatwater Kayaking” sessions available in May, June, and July at Lake Ridge Marina. Participants must be able to wear a life vest, stay seated in the boat, and manage submersion scenarios.
Art classes such as “Rise and Shine Sensory Art” minicamp from June 9-12 provide a supportive environment for children to explore creativity through sensory art. Another option is the “Artful Minds” class running from July 12 to August 2 on Saturdays at Birchdale Recreation Center.
A free event titled “Play All Day VA – Adaptive Splash and Play” will occur on June 20 at Waterworks Waterpark splash pad. It offers a sensory-friendly experience with reduced noise levels and adjusted water features for comfort.
The Miracle League baseball program is also gearing up for its fall session starting August 16 until September 27 at Dr. Richard Tami Miracle Field located at George Hellwig Memorial Park. This initiative promotes physical activity for individuals with disabilities by eliminating barriers associated with traditional leagues.
