Prince William County Parks and Recreation is observing July as Disability Pride Month, marking the anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act signed on July 26, 1990. The month highlights achievements and challenges faced by individuals with disabilities, promoting awareness about disability rights and fostering inclusion.
The county offers programs for individuals with disabilities, catering to both youths and adults. “We are committed to creating a community of choice for all residents with equal access to programs, classes, camps and activities,” stated the department. These adapted programs are led by qualified instructors including special education teachers, behavior therapists, and recreation therapists.
Current offerings include Adaptive Flatwater Kayaking at Lake Ridge Marina. This program allows participants to enjoy paddle sports using user-friendly kayaks under the guidance of adapted program instructors. The activity encourages family participation as well.
Additionally, registration is open for the fall season of the Miracle League baseball program. This initiative promotes physical and mental fitness opportunities for individuals with disabilities in Prince William County. Games are played on a custom-designed surface at Dr. Richard Tami Miracle Field in George Hellwig Memorial Park.
“The Miracle League is about making new friends, building self-esteem, and being treated just like other athletes,” said a representative from Prince William County Parks and Recreation. The league welcomes participants aged five and older regardless of ability.
