Prince William County is offering a variety of programs and activities this January aimed at encouraging residents to stay active, learn new skills, and connect with their community. The county has announced ten different events and classes designed for all ages and interests.
One of the featured programs is Kid’s Night Out at Veterans Memorial Park on January 9, where children aged 5-12 can participate in games, music, arts and crafts while parents have time off. Another program focuses on volleyball skills for youth aged 10-15 at Sharron Baucom Dale City Recreation Center starting January 10.
Swimming lessons are available for teens and adults at both beginner and intermediate levels. These classes aim to improve swimming proficiency and teach water safety.
For those interested in fitness, Zumba classes will be held on January 9 and 10 at Chinn Aquatic & Fitness Center. The classes combine Latin-inspired dance with aerobic exercise.
A stargazing event is scheduled for January 17 at Neabsco Creek Boardwalk, where participants can observe constellations and planets using telescopes.
The county will also host an educational Pilates workshop on January 17 at Dale City Recreation Center, focusing on core principles such as breathing, concentration, control, centering, precision, balanced muscle development, rhythm & flow, whole-body movement, and relaxation. This workshop is free for passholders and costs $12 for non-members.
A historic lecture about library segregation during the Jim Crow era will take place at the Old Manassas Courthouse on January 22. Historians Chris Barbuschak and Suzanne S. LaPierre will discuss how Black residents fought for equitable library services through protests and lawsuits after Brown vs. Board of Education. “Discover the truth about the barriers imposed on the Black community and learn about the citizens-turned-activists who used protests and lawsuits to achieve more equitable library services from historians Chris Barbuschak and Suzanne S. LaPierre, authors of Desegregation in Northern Virginia Libraries,” according to organizers.
Children interested in technology can attend a coding class using Scratch software developed by MIT Media Lab at Pat White Center at Ben Lomond on January 23. Chess lessons taught by Silver Knights Chess Academy are available for children ages 6-14 on January 26 at the same location.
Adults can participate in a Paint and Sip event on January 30 at Pat White Center where they can paint a winter scene while enjoying hot chocolate.
