The Prince William County Solid Waste Division announced on March 20 that it is offering free recycling bins and bags for special events to help make recycling more convenient for hosts and guests. The containers are available to community groups and non-profit organizations on a first-come, first-served basis at no charge.

This initiative aims to encourage event organizers in Prince William County to include recycling as part of their planning, helping ensure that recyclable materials such as plastic bottles and aluminum cans are properly diverted from the landfill. Recycling these items conserves resources and helps extend the life of the county landfill.

To request recycling containers, organizers must complete the Special Events Recycling Bin Agreement form available at www.pwcva.gov/gogreen. The county reminds residents that recycling is mandatory, and providing clearly marked recycling containers next to trash cans at events makes it easier for guests to participate.

The Solid Waste Division suggests using signs or labels to indicate what belongs in each bin, and notes that even regular trash cans can be converted into recycling containers if they are clearly labeled. Recycling not only reduces waste but also allows materials like plastic bottles and aluminum cans to be transformed into new products such as park benches, fleece jackets, reusable shopping bags, or bicycles. It also saves energy, reduces greenhouse gas emissions, and supports job creation in the recycling industry.

By including recycling options at events, organizers demonstrate a commitment to sustainability while helping protect the environment. For more information about waste reduction and recycling in Prince William County, residents can visit www.pwcva.gov/trashandrecycling.
