National Archery Day on May 10 presents an opportunity for those interested in learning the sport of archery. The Prince William County Parks and Recreation department is offering archery classes and camps led by certified instructors.
Kelly Wilbanks, a Level 2 certified instructor with over four years of experience teaching archery in Prince William County, states, “Archery is a safe, fun sport and with practice, it always allows you the chance to get better at it.” She became interested in archery after learning about it from a colleague who was an instructor. Now she teaches various classes and camps throughout the year.
Wilbanks notes that beginners often find placing the arrow on the bow challenging initially but says it becomes easier with practice. “We have a variety of bows of different draw weights and styles to accommodate all of our participants,” she explains. “Seeing the kids when they get it and they hit the target or even get a bullseye—it’s a blast to be able to help these kids have that ‘wow’ moment.”
This summer, Prince William County Parks will offer beginner and intermediate classes and camps at several locations. Family archery classes are also available so parents can participate alongside their children. Due to high demand, early registration is encouraged.
For those considering joining a class, Wilbanks offers reassurance: “Archery is a sport where nobody starts as an expert. Come out and give it a try. All our instructors are really patient, and we’ll help you one-on-one to get that first shot.”
