Prince William County officials, staff, and residents gathered at Sean T. Connaughton Plaza on April 9 to plant a blue pinwheel garden in recognition of National Child Abuse Prevention Month.

The event aims to raise awareness about child abuse prevention and reinforce the community’s commitment to supporting children and families. Pinwheels, used as the national symbol for child abuse prevention, represent hope and a carefree childhood.

Deshundra Jefferson, Chair At-Large of the Prince William County Board of Supervisors, said those attending the ceremony share a commitment to children’s well-being. “Small, vibrant symbols that capture a sense of childlike joy, whimsy and hope that can translate into successful community members,” Jefferson said about the pinwheels. “When children are raised in a safe, stable and nurturing environment, they are more likely to succeed academically, thrive financially and grow into engaged, contributing members of society. The pinwheel stands as a reminder of that shared responsibility.”

Potomac District Supervisor Andrea Bailey said the pinwheels symbolize an ongoing promise by the community: “They are a promise – a promise that we will not move away from – a promise that we will work together … with our neighbors, our educators, our public safety professionals and our advocates to create a community where children are protected, nurtured and given every opportunity to thrive.”

Phyllis Jennings-Holt, Director of Social Services for Prince William County, emphasized collective vigilance: “It is a call to each of us to remain vigilant, to speak up and be a part of the community where children are seen, heard and protected,” Jennings-Holt said. “Every pinwheel planted today represents a child who deserves a safe, stable and nurturing environment. Because when we invest in our children, we invest in our future and our community.” Laurie Wilson from the Department of Social Services Advisory Board told attendees real change starts with simple acts like checking on neighbors or offering support.

The Department of Social Services highlighted its family support programs aimed at preventing crises before they happen. The department also connects families with resources such as food assistance programs; childcare; parent education; mental health counseling; healthcare services; Family Partnership Meetings; collaborative case planning; as well as outreach efforts at local farmers markets throughout April.

Residents were encouraged during the event to support prevention efforts by volunteering locally or helping raise awareness about available resources. Anyone suspecting child abuse or neglect is urged to call Virginia’s Child Abuse Hotline at any time.
