Law enforcement agencies in Virginia, including the Prince William County Police Department, are increasing efforts to deter drunk driving as part of the Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over campaign. The initiative will run in Prince William County from August 13 through September 1, 2025.
A law passed in Virginia in 2020 raised the criminal penalties for drunk driving incidents that result in serious injuries. Drunk drivers who cause permanent and significant impairment to another person now face a class 4 felony, with two to ten years of prison time. If a drunk driver causes serious but not permanently disabling injuries, they can be charged with a class 6 felony.
The campaign comes as summer travel winds down and schools prepare to open for a new year. Law enforcement is emphasizing road safety during this period.
“Drive Sober is a crucial joint effort between public and private partners working to stop traffic fatalities. During this time, the Police Department will continue to raise public awareness about the dangers of impaired driving. By educating our communities on the importance of driving sober, we can help avoid loss of life, debilitating injuries, and unbearable heartache,” according to the statement from the department.
Police stress that impaired driving is illegal and endangers thousands of people daily. The department says there will be “no excuses and no warnings” for those caught driving under the influence.
“The Police Department reminds motorists that nothing kills a buzz faster than getting a DUI. Remember, Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over!”
