The Prince William County Police Department has highlighted its small unmanned aircraft system (sUAS) Team, which has supported public safety operations since its formation in 2021. The team uses drones to assist in various situations, such as searching for missing persons, supporting other agencies, and managing traffic and security at special events.
On March 20, 2024, the sUAS Team worked with Fire & Rescue to help them assess the extent of several wildfires in the county. These fires affected areas including Marine Corps Base Quantico and Locust Shade Park. According to department officials, before the launch of the sUAS program, Fire & Rescue did not have access to this level of situational awareness.
The team operates part-time and is made up of both sworn officers and professional staff from across the department. Sixteen remote pilots currently serve on the team. Members must complete a week-long training course and pass an exam to receive their FAA Part 107 license. Monthly training sessions are held to ensure ongoing proficiency.
State law restricts police use of drones unless a warrant is obtained or specific exceptions apply under Virginia code 19.2-60.1.
First Sergeant Sam Dixon, assistant team commander, said: “We have great partnerships with the other teams in Northern Virginia and provide mutual aid for events such as the Marine Corps Marathon in Arlington. We also can assist other County agencies such as Emergency Management or the Transportation Department for purposes other than law enforcement. For example, we have assisted with providing situational awareness related to flooding several times.”
The department continues exploring new technologies to meet community needs as population growth continues. Officials state that investing in technology and training supports both employees and residents.
