In Prince William County, glass recycling is a significant environmental initiative. Since 2019, the county has implemented a program featuring special purple trailers dedicated to collecting glass containers for recycling. From April 2019 to May 2025, over 3,000 tons of glass have been collected through this program.
The process of recycling glass is known as closed-loop recycling, where glass can be remelted and reformed into new products without losing its original qualities. This practice offers several environmental benefits: conserving raw materials such as sand and limestone, saving energy by up to 30% compared to using raw materials, reducing air pollution by 20%, and decreasing water pollution by 50%.
Glass’s inert composition makes it hygienic and ideal for packaging various products like beverages, food, cosmetics, pharmaceuticals, and pet care items. Recycled glass finds use in multiple industries for creating landscaping materials, decorative tiles, new containers, and building installations.
To facilitate easy access for residents wishing to recycle their glass bottles, jugs, and jars in Prince William County, five locations offer purple “glass only” recycling trailers:
– Prince William County Landfill Convenience Center
– Prince William County Compost Facility Convenience Center
– McCourt Administration Building parking lot near Greatbridge Road and Ricter Way
– Ferlazzo Building parking lot
– James Long Regional Park entrance area
Residents are encouraged not to mix other types of glass or regular recyclables with these designated containers. Items like ceramics or windowpanes should be donated or disposed of through other means. For guidance on recycling or disposal options for over 300 items, residents can refer to the A to Z Disposal Guide available in the county.
