March marks the annual promotion of Severe Weather and Flood Awareness in Virginia. The state will observe Flood Awareness Week from March 9 to 14, and Severe Weather Awareness Week from March 9 to 13.

Flood Awareness Week focuses on the dangers that flooding can pose and provides information on how individuals can protect themselves, their families, and their property. Severe Weather Awareness Week addresses various severe weather threats and offers guidance on preparation. Each day during this week, different topics related to preparedness will be shared through social media channels, including tips for staying safe during severe weather events.

A key event during Severe Weather Awareness Week is the Virginia Statewide Tornado Drill, scheduled for Tuesday, March 10, 2025 at 9:45 a.m. Residents are encouraged to participate at school, work, or home as an opportunity to practice emergency plans.

Officials recommend that spring is an appropriate time for residents to create or update emergency plans and build or refresh emergency supply kits. More information about making a plan can be found at https://www.pwcva.gov/makeaplan and about building a kit at https://www.pwcva.gov/buildakit.

The county reminds everyone that flooding can occur wherever it rains. Homeowners and business owners are advised to obtain flood insurance. Additional details about flood safety and insurance are available at https://www.pwcva.gov/flooding.
