On January 20, 2026, the Prince William County Board of County Supervisors voted to recognize Friday, February 6, 2026, as Crossing Guard Appreciation Day. The annual event is intended to acknowledge the work of school crossing guards who help ensure the safety of children each school day.

According to county officials, there have been no deaths or serious injuries involving children at any school crossing in the 61-year history of the program. In the previous school year alone, crossing guards managed nearly 25,000 safe crossings for over 7,000 students daily at public elementary and middle schools across Prince William County.

Will Fontanez, manager of the Police Department’s Crossing Guard Unit, said: “Our crossing guards are everyday heroes. Rain or shine, they ensure safe passage, offer warm smiles, and model responsibility and care for the children of Prince William County. We are truly grateful for their commitment.” He added: “These highly qualified individuals are fully prepared, by temperament and training, to meet the challenges of protecting our school children and teaching them the importance of pedestrian safety.”

There are currently 70 crossing guards assigned to cover 71 crossings at 47 schools throughout the county. Their responsibilities often require them to operate under challenging conditions while performing their duties.

Residents interested in learning more about becoming a crossing guard can find additional information on the Police Department website.
