Prince William County Public Schools (PWCS) has announced the release of the 2024–25 school year accreditation and accountability results by the Virginia Department of Education. This evaluation is part of an updated system that separates school accreditation from performance.
According to PWCS, the updated accountability system assesses whether schools provide a robust foundation of quality programs for all students through accreditation, while performance measures progress and outcomes via the School Performance and Support Framework. Under this new categorization, all PWCS elementary and middle schools have been designated as Fully Accredited. However, high schools are labeled as Conditionally Accredited due to the district’s decision not to issue Certificates of Program Completion, which are not equivalent to a diploma.
The conditional accreditation status for PWCS high schools highlights the district’s commitment to maintaining high academic standards rather than issuing Certificates of Program Completion. Although state requirements include this certificate for accreditation purposes, PWCS has opted not to issue them, focusing instead on rigorous academic expectations. The division maintains that its high schools continue to meet accreditation goals through evidence-based practices supporting meaningful student achievement.
School performance is assessed separately under the Virginia Department of Education’s School Performance and Support Framework. This framework assigns labels based on total index points across categories such as Distinguished, On Track, Off Track, and Needs Intensive Support. No PWCS schools were placed in the Needs Intensive Support category; however, some received federal “Targeted Support and Improvement” (TSI) designations due to student subgroups falling below required thresholds.
PWCS is Virginia’s second-largest school division and ranks 32nd nationwide, serving over 90,000 students across various educational levels. The division offers a range of academic specialty programs including two Governor’s Schools, dual enrollment options, Advanced Placement courses, Cambridge Programme offerings, International Baccalaureate courses, career and technology certifications, robotics programs, and instruction in ten world languages. Led by Superintendent Dr. LaTanya D. McDade, PWCS reports a 94.3% on-time graduation rate with over $123 million in scholarships awarded to the class of 2024.
