The Prince William County Police Department is participating in the “Click It or Ticket” seatbelt enforcement campaign, which runs from May 12 to June 1, 2025. This initiative is part of a broader effort by law enforcement agencies across Virginia to enforce safety-belt and child safety-seat laws.
The campaign emphasizes the importance of wearing seatbelts at all times. According to Virginia law, seatbelts are mandatory for all front-seat passengers. Additionally, starting July 1, 2025, adults aged 18 and older will be required to wear seatbelts in the rear seats as well. Children under eight must be secured in a federally approved safety seat, while those between eight and 15 must use a safety seat, booster seat, or seatbelt regardless of their seating position in the vehicle.
The police have the authority to cite drivers if any occupant under age 16 is not properly restrained. Furthermore, drivers can be cited for not wearing a seatbelt themselves if stopped for other violations.
This campaign is part of the Smart, Safe and Sober partnership aimed at reducing road fatalities and injuries in Virginia. The partnership includes organizations such as the Prince William County Police, the Virginia Association of Chiefs of Police, the Virginia Department of State Police, the Virginia Sheriffs’ Association, DRIVE SMART Virginia, and the Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles.
The message remains clear: “Wear your seatbelt every time! Unless you want to risk a ticket or worse.”
