The Prince William County Police Department is emphasizing traffic safety with the “Click It or Ticket” seatbelt enforcement campaign, which runs from May 12 through June 1, 2025. This initiative aims to remind motorists of the importance of wearing seatbelts at all times.
In collaboration with law enforcement agencies across Virginia, the Prince William County Police are enforcing the Commonwealth’s safety-belt and child safety-seat laws through high-visibility patrols. These efforts will continue day and night until June 1.
Virginia mandates that all front-seat passengers wear seatbelts. Starting July 1, 2025, this requirement will extend to adults aged 18 and older in rear seats. The law also specifies that children under eight must use a federally approved safety seat, while those between eight and 15 must be secured by a booster seat or seat belt regardless of their seating position in the vehicle. Drivers are responsible for ensuring all children under 16 are properly restrained.
Virginia law permits police to issue citations if an occupant under age 16 is not wearing a safety belt or is not in a child safety seat. Additionally, drivers may be cited for not being properly restrained if stopped for other violations.
The “Click It or Ticket” campaign is part of the Smart, Safe and Sober partnership aimed at reducing roadway deaths and injuries in Virginia. This partnership includes the Prince William County Police, Virginia Association of Chiefs of Police, Virginia Department of State Police, Virginia Sheriffs’ Association, DRIVE SMART Virginia, and the Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles.
Motorists are urged to consistently wear their seatbelts to avoid tickets or more severe consequences. The campaign emphasizes: “Wear your seatbelt every time! Unless you want to risk a ticket, or worse.”
