Virginia Association of Realtors issued the following announcement on Sept. 2
REALTORS face job-related risks every day. Being aware of potential dangers and taking precautions will help you avoid risky situations. In an ongoing effort to keep safety top-of-mind for our members, the National Association of REALTORS® and Virginia REALTORS® dedicate September as REALTOR® Safety Month. The goal: Reduce the number of safety incidents that happen in the industry, so each of our members makes it home safely every night.
Help improve the safety culture in the real estate industry with these safety tips.
Travel in pairs – If you are hosting an open house or showing a property, it is wise to bring someone with you. Remember, there is safety in numbers, and you’re a lot less vulnerable when you’re with someone else.
Checking-in – REALTORS® should keep colleagues, friends, and family informed about what you’re doing, where you’re going, and who you’re with. Don’t only do this if you’re feeling nervous—try to make this a habit!
Safety Kit – REALTORS® spend a lot of time in their cars. Be sure to have a safety kit with water, non-perishable food, blankets, and a flashlight. You never know when you’ll need it.
Park in front – When showing property, park your car in front of the property rather than in the driveway. You will avoid having your car blocked in and have an easier time leaving in case of emergency.
Don’t text and drive – Answering texts while driving can be very tempting, but please refrain from this dangerous practice. Send texts after you’ve parked your car. Remember, this is the law in Virginia!
Show properties strategically – When showing properties, keep your back to the door and always allow clients to enter each room first.
Remove valuable items – Encourage sellers to remove valuable items such as jewelry, firearms, and prescription medications before an open house or property showing.
