Sentara Norfolk General Hospital earns national Urology ranking in 2021 US News & World Report 'Best Hospitals' edition

Sentara Northern Virginia Medical Center issued the following announcement on July 26

Sentara Norfolk General Hospital (SNGH) is ranked the No. 1 hospital in Hampton Roads, is tied for the No. 3 hospital in the Commonwealth of Virginia, and has earned a Top 50 national ranking in Urology in the 2021 U.S. News & World Report’s “Best Hospitals” edition.

“We are grateful and encouraged to be recognized once again as the top hospital in Hampton Roads and among the best in the state,” said Liisa Ortegon, President of Sentara Norfolk General Hospital. “We value the trust of our patients and families in our community, and will continue our commitment to being a top provider for complex, specialty care throughout Virginia and northeast North Carolina.”

Sentara Norfolk General Hospital was also recognized for its several high-performing specialty programs including Pulmonology and Lung Surgery, and Geriatrics. Sentara Norfolk General Hospital is the Hampton Roads region’s only adult Level 1 trauma center and is home to the Nightingale Regional Air Ambulance.

Seven Sentara Hospitals recognized for state, regional, and high-performing rankings

Seven Sentara Hospitals made the 2021 “Best Hospitals” list, highlighting the health system’s quality and consistency. Sentara’s hospital achievements include:

  • Sentara Norfolk General Hospital (SNGH) in Norfolk, Va. ranks No. 1 in Hampton Roads and is tied for No. 3 in Virginia. SNGH has a nationally ranked Urology program and high-performing rankings in Geriatrics and Pulmonology & Lung Surgery.
  • Sentara RMH Medical Center (SRMH) in Harrisonburg, Va. ranks No. 9 in Virginia and is recognized as High Performing in Pulmonology & Lung Surgery.
  • Sentara Martha Jefferson Hospital (SMJH) in Charlottesville, Va. is tied for No. 10 in Virginia and is recognized as High Performing in Neurology & Neurosurgery.
  • Sentara Leigh Hospital (SLH) in Norfolk, Va. ranks No. 2 in Hampton Roads and tied for No. 13 in Virginia. SLH, home to the Orthopedic Hospital at Sentara Leigh, is recognized as High Performing in Orthopedics.
  • Sentara Princess Anne Hospital (SPAH) in Virginia Beach, Va. ranks No. 3 in Hampton Roads and tied for No. 16 in Virginia. SPAH is also recognized as High Performing in Orthopedics.
  • Sentara Williamsburg Regional Medical Center (SWRMC) in Williamsburg, Va. is recognized as High Performing in Gastroenterology & GI Surgery and Orthopedics.
  • Sentara Obici Hospital (SOH) in Suffolk, Va. is recognized as High Performing in Orthopedics. 
Urology program nationally ranked for the second consecutive year

The Urology program at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital (SNGH) is ranked No. 40 in the nation. The continued success of the Urology program is in conjunction with Urology of Virginia, Eastern Virginia Medical School (EVMS) and the Sentara Cancer Network. Urology services include expert treatment methods for kidney stones to complex bladder surgery, robotic surgery for prostate, kidney and bladder cancers, green light therapy for enlarged prostate, and the Sentara-EVMS Comprehensive Pelvic Floor Center.

Our Urology program at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital is an exceptional program which provides excellent patient care, cancer care and is dedicated to education. “We are proud to work side-by-side with our clinical partners at Urology of Virginia, educators at Eastern Virginia Medical School, and clinicians and researchers comprising the nationally accredited Sentara Cancer Network,” Ortegon said, “We thank them for their continued dedication to the patients and families we care for every day.”

The Urology program at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital is also part of the nationally accredited Sentara Cancer Network and treats patients with several different cancer types affecting those areas. Sentara Norfolk General Hospital received a national ranking for Urology in 2020 and in 2012.
