Compost Bin Sale at Balls Ford Road

22

County of Prince William issued the following announcement on Oct. 29

Fall is the perfect time to begin composting leaves and other lawn and garden debris right in your backyard. The Solid Waste Division makes more convenient by selling Presto brand compost bins for $30 at its Balls Ford Road Compost Facility. The 36-inch high, plastic bins are easy to use and can be sized up to three feet in diameter.  Residents can purchase up to three bins and only credit/debit cards are accepted for payment.

Compost has numerous benefits for the soil in lawns and gardens and results in improved health of plants, improved soil structure and water retention to name just a few.

Composting instructions are included with the bin, but residents interested in learning more about composting can visit the Virginia Cooperative Extension website for additional resources, and class  information.

Prince William County residents can also place yard waste in compostable paper bags, or a container labeled “Yard Waste” and set this material out for curbside collection.   The new program, which began October 1 requires the separation of yard waste from trash.   Residents should check with their trash and recycling service provider to find out what day of the week yard waste will be collected in the community where they live.  Collected material will be delivered to the Balls Ford Road Compost Facility for commercial composting.

For more information about yard waste management visit  www.pwcva.gov/yardwaste.
