American Library Association Highlights Impact of Library Services on Small Businesses
The American Library Association (ALA) has released a new report that showcases the impact of the Libraries Build Business initiative on small businesses and entrepreneurs. Prince William Public Libraries (PWPL) is a proud supporter of this initiative.
The report demonstrates the critical role of libraries in the small business and entrepreneurial ecosystem while providing specific examples of impact in urban, suburban, rural, and tribal communities across the country. Because of their reach, information, resources, and strategic and flexible collaboration, libraries are uniquely positioned to be partners, leaders, and connectors in thriving local economies.
Libraries Build Business, a $2 million national initiative supported by Google.org, launched in early 2020 and culminated with the release of the “Libraries Build Business Playbook” in February 2022. As a part of this initiative, ALA released a “Libraries that Build Business: Advancing Small Business and Entrepreneurship in Public Libraries” book that spotlights ways to advance entrepreneurship in public libraries. PWPL was one of 30+ libraries nationwide that contributed to this book, highlighting resources and services offered by its Management and Government Information Center (MAGIC).
MAGIC is a special collection and information service located at Chinn Park Library. MAGIC’s collection focuses on local and state government information and publications. Specialized staff and resources assist members of the community, including providing support to local government agencies and area businesses and nonprofits on how to start or grow a business, retrieve industry information, seek grant funding, and access laws and regulations.
Some upcoming MAGIC programs include:
- Introduction to Project Budgets
- Boost Your Business Through Brand Building
- Establish a Professional Domain, Website, and Email for Your Business
MAGIC is Prince William Chamber of Commerce Keystone Partner and regularly presents its services at 1 Million Cups, Prince William.
