Adapted Programs for People with Disabilities

Prince William County Parks, Recreation & Tourism is proud to offer programs for individuals with disabilities, and we are committed to creating a community of choice for all residents with equal access to programs, classes, camps and activities.

Adapted programs are specifically designed to meet the needs of children and adults with disabilities. These programs are run by qualified instructors who have experience working with people of all abilities to include Special Education Teachers, Behavior Therapists, and Recreation Therapists. Some of these programs are co-developed with a Recreation Specialist and a Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialist (CTRS). All these programs are open to everyone.

Adapted Aqua Zumba – Ages 8+

Come join us for a dance party in the water! Our certified Aqua Zumba instructor will lead participants through a fun but challenging, water-based, body-toning workout. Each participant can move at their own pace while following along with the instructor and the music. The first session begins January 13. For the full class schedule and to register, click here.

Adapted Paint Night – Ages 13+

Whether you have a budding artist on your hands or are just looking for a fun night out then our adapted paint night classes are just for you. We invite you to join us for a fun, creative and social event. Participants will leave with an original 11X14 canvas painting. Sparkling cider will be offered as you paint your masterpiece and share with friends. This program is designed for teens and adults with and without disabilities. Classes are being offered on January 20 and March 17. Register today.

Basketball Skills Training Program – Ages 8+

It’s not too late to sign up for our Basketball Skills Training Program. The class starts on January 11 and is designed to help athletes with disabilities hone their basketball skills. This class will help participants improve their shot, get a better defensive stance, work on dribbling, make crisper passes and more.

Foodie Fun – Ages 13+

Join us in February for some foodie fun! Come gather with friends to create and assemble some delicious dishes. Participants will learn cooking skills, kitchen safety, and social etiquette surrounding food. This class is designed for teens and adults with and without disabilities. The first class is on February 17 with a second class being held on April 21. Click here to register.

Adapted Dance – Ages 7-15

Dance is for everyone! Our adapted dance class (part of the Adaptive Recreation

program) will help develop communication skills through movement. This class will encourage self-expression, creativity, and physical fitness. Class will start

with easy dance moves that condition, and progress to fun steps in the center that will improve gross motor skills and coordination. Class finishes with a dance routine all can enjoy. First session begins January 19. Learn more and register here.

Camp in a Box – Ages 4-11Want to give your kids the camp experience from home? We’re pleased to offer Camp in a Box! Give your child a fun and exciting camp experience from the comfort and convenience of your own home. This Camp in a Box comes packed with fun activities, supplies, and instructions to keep your child entertained a few hours each day. Boxes come with enough materials for two children ($25), or four children ($40) and instructions will have physical and cognitive modifications for each activity.  Boxes must be purchased online and can be picked up on Monday between 10 am and 4 pm from Birchdale Community Center or Pat White Center. This box will have enough supplies for two children.We also offer a Healthy Kids Club program, a yoga class for adolescents with disabilities, sensory exploration classes for children ages 2-4, and our Miracle League program which will kick off its spring baseball season on April 15.Learn more and register for any of our adapted programs here.
