Virginia Association of Realtors issued the following announcement on Dec. 20
Are you dreaming of a snowy winter? If so, you’ll want to check out these communities in Virginia that have been named the Commonwealth’s “snowiest cities.” We took a look at how the housing markets are faring in these winter wonderlands.
Bluefield
The town of Bluefield, Virginia, located in Tazewell County, is the state’s best place for snow, with an average of 37.8 inches of the white stuff each year. In 2021, there were 25 home sales in Bluefield. The average home price in the town was about $158,000, up 27% from a year ago. Inventory is tight; at the end of November there were just seven homes listed for sale in Bluefield.
Blacksburg
Blacksburg comes in at number two on the list of snowiest cities in Virginia. Located in Montgomery County, Blacksburg is home to Virginia Tech, historic Smithfield Plantation, and an average of 24.1 inches of snow annually. The typical home in Blacksburg sells for about $320,000, but about 15% of all sales in November sold for more than $500,000. In 2021, homes sold for more than list price, on average.
Strasburg
Rounding out the top three snowiest cities is Strasburg, the largest town in Shenandoah County. Like Blacksburg, Strasburg gets an average of 24.1 inches of snow each year. The average price of homes sold in Strasburg is about $294,000, up 22% from a year ago. There is less than a month’s supply of inventory in the town of Strasburg at the end of November.
Interested to know which city in Virginia gets the least amount of snow? The City of Emporia, a commercial hub in Southside Virginia, only records an average of 3.2 inches of snow annually.
