Virginia Attorney General Jason Miyares has announced that the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) will grant full G.I. Bill education benefits to Lieutenant Colonel (Ret.) Paul Yoon, a decorated Army veteran with nearly 24 years of service. This decision follows efforts led by Virginia and supported by attorneys general from every state.

In April 2024, the U.S. Supreme Court determined that veterans who qualify for both the Montgomery and Post-9/11 G.I. Bills are eligible for a total of 48 months of education benefits. After this ruling, Attorney General Miyares organized bipartisan coalitions in March and June 2025, bringing together 51 other attorneys general to file amicus briefs supporting LTC Yoon before federal courts.

Last month, the VA agreed in principle to provide LTC Yoon with all education benefits due under both programs.

“Virginia Attorney General Jason Miyares’ brief supporting LTC Yoon was joined by the attorneys general of Alabama, Alaska, Arizona, Arkansas, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, the District of Columbia, Florida, Georgia, Hawaii, Idaho, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Mississippi, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, Nevada, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New Mexico,” “New York,” “North Carolina,” “North Dakota,” “Northern Mariana Islands,” “Ohio,” “Oklahoma,” “Oregon,” “Pennsylvania,” “Rhode Island,” “South Carolina,” “South Dakota,” “Tennessee,” “Texas,” “Utah,” “Vermont,” “Washington,” “West Virginia,” “Wisconsin,” and Wyoming.”
