The Commonwealth of Virginia received nearly $110 million in tobacco settlement award funds from major tobacco companies as part of the Tobacco Master Settlement Agreement, Attorney General Jay Jones announced on May 2.
This funding is significant because it supports enforcement of state tobacco laws and provides essential resources for programs such as the Virginia Healthcare Fund and the Virginia Foundation for Healthy Youth, which work to reduce underage tobacco use. The Tobacco Master Settlement Agreement, established in 1998, resolved legal claims against major tobacco companies for consumer protection violations and deceptive marketing practices that harmed Virginians’ health and increased healthcare costs.
“The Tobacco Master Settlement Agreement allows states like Virginia to continue holding major corporations accountable for the tremendous toll their industry has taken on the health and lives of those in the Commonwealth,” said Attorney General Jay Jones. “These funds will enable Virginia to continue enforcing our tobacco laws, and direct essential funding to programs like the Virginia Healthcare Fund and the Virginia Foundation for Healthy Youth as they work to combat underage tobacco use. My office will always hold those who do wrong by Virginians accountable.”
Since its inception, Virginia has received over $3.5 billion through this agreement. The settlement terms provide annual payments to participating states and territories, helping offset healthcare expenses related to smoking-related illnesses while supporting economic development in regions historically dependent on large-scale tobacco production. The agreement also imposes public health protections including restrictions on youth marketing of tobacco products, sales of branded merchandise, and sponsorships at entertainment or sporting events.
Attorney General Jay Jones’s office oversees enforcement activities tied to both state statutes and federal law concerning cigarettes sales and distribution within Virginia. Questions about compliance or reports regarding underage or illicit cigarette sales should be directed to his office’s Tobacco Enforcement Section.
The Attorney General’s responsibilities include supporting civil rights enforcement initiatives according to its official website. In addition, legal counsel is provided by this office for state agencies while promoting public safety across constitutional matters as detailed online. Jason Miyares serves as the 48th Attorney General of Virginia according to information available, with jurisdiction covering all residents throughout the Commonwealth as stated by officials. The agency also addresses issues such as human trafficking and domestic violence through legal advocacy as reported by its website, alongside offering consumer protection services related to identity theft prevention and fraud reporting resources as noted online.
