Governor Glenn Youngkin has highlighted new data from the Virginia Department of Professional and Occupational Regulation, indicating that the Board of Contractors is expected to receive over 14,000 applications for licensure from contractors and tradesmen this year. This figure represents a ten percent increase from 2024 and nearly doubles the volume from a decade ago.
Governor Youngkin stated, “Contractors and tradesmen know that opportunity thrives in Virginia. With record investment in the Commonwealth across industries, Virginia isn’t just competing to win, Virginia is winning! To everyone who is looking to start the next great chapter in their professional career: Virginia is the place to build your future.”
Secretary of Labor Bryan Slater commented on the significance of this increase: “The increase in license applications, especially in skilled and high skilled trades, is more proof and validation that trades jobs offer long term, well paying, family sustaining careers.” He also emphasized the benefits of Registered Apprenticeships and noted that “our universal license recognition program is growing by leaps and bounds.”
Brian Wolford, Director of Virginia’s Department of Professional and Occupational Regulation, remarked on the impact of these licenses: “Every one of the 323,000 licenses issued by the agency represents an opportunity for an individual to earn a living and make a difference in their community.”
This surge in licensure applications follows significant economic developments in Virginia. Governor Youngkin previously announced over $100 billion in capital investments since taking office. Additionally, Moody’s Ratings recently reaffirmed Virginia’s AAA-bond status due to its healthy financial management.
