Sentara Northern Virginia Medical Center issued the following announcement on Sept. 24

Cancer is a significant public health problem and the second leading cause of death worldwide. In Virginia, cancer has surpassed heart disease as the leading cause of death in our state. Today is World Cancer Research Day. Cancer research has been and will continue to be a key driver of advances in prevention and treatments that will benefit tomorrow’s cancer patients.

The Sentara Health Research Center would like to thank all of the patients who have participated in clinical trials so others could benefit as well as our researchers and research staff who have dedicated their time to improving the outcomes of patients with a cancer diagnosis, and our partners at Eastern Virginia Medical School and Virginia Oncology Associates
