Manassas Park City Schools issued the following announcement on July 13
The Claude Moore Charitable Foundation awarded Manassas Park City Schools approximately $20,000 to explore ways to expand health sciences offerings at the high school as part of the Claude Moore Scholars Program.
The Claude Moore Scholars Program catalyzes community partnerships between Virginia public school systems, post-secondary academic institutions, and health care employers to help build the health sciences highway. The health sciences highway enables continuous learning, beginning with early engagement in middle school and continuing with professional education in high school and beyond. It also facilitates on and off ramps as students transition between school and work for upskilling and career change, while contributing to the economic development in local communities.
The ultimate goal of this planning grant is to identify areas in which the school can equip students to enter a healthcare career upon graduating high school. The plan will include an emphasis on workforce needs in the area as well as student interest.
In conjunction with BELL – the Education Foundation of Manassas Park, the steering committee will meet with area business partners to best direct program expansion that includes needed program equipment, instructional resources, and consumables as well as required credentialing for licensed teachers to offer concurrent dual enrollment courses on campus in partner school districts.
Lisa Wolf, MPCS STEM, CTE, and Gifted Coordinator, said the potential of the program is great and ultimately could lead to a Certified Nursing Assistant program among others.
"We will work closely with our partners at NOVA and George Mason University to develop this program." Wolf said. "Our community partners are eager to assist in creating direct employment options after graduation."
Upon successful completion of the planning year, MPCS is eligible for a 5-year support grant for additional funding for the program.
"It's a tremendous opportunity to bring added learning opportunities to our students, and we look forward to seeing what possibilities lie ahead," said Wolf.
