George Mason University Athletic Department issued the following announcement on Feb. 20

The George Mason baseball team dropped the middle game of its series against Wofford, 12-4, on Saturday afternoon at Russell C. King Field in Spartanburg, S.C.

Mason (1-1) fell behind in the first inning when Wofford (1-1) plated two early runs against Patriots senior starter Mason Posey.  After a leadoff single, Terriers sophomore infielder Jack Renwick tripled in the first run of the day, and later scored on a sacrifice fly for a 2-0 lead.

Wofford took advantage of two walks and a hit batsman in the bottom of the third to score three more runs.  Junior center fielder Zeb Roos drove in two runs with a single to left to increase the lead to 4-0.  Later in the inning, the Terriers put on the double steal, with Roos scoring from third to make it 5-0.

The Terriers batted around in the fourth and scored five runs on three hits, two walks and two hit batters to double the advantage to 10-0.

Posey gave way to freshman Jackson Baird in the inning after the first three batters.  Freshman Dylan Crowley took over for Baird as both pitchers made their collegiate debuts in the frame.

The Terriers tacked on a run in the home half of the fifth with a bases loaded walk by Roos.

Mason dented the scoreboard in the top of the sixth.  Freshman shortstop Carsen Pracht led off with the Patriots first triple of the season and scored on a double by graduate student left fielder Kamron Smith to make it 11-1.

The RBI by Smith was his first as a Patriot.

Mason freshman Diego Barrett made his collegiate debut when he entered the game in the seventh inning.

After back-to-back singles to start the inning and a sacrifice bunt to move the runners up 90 feet, the Terriers added a run when junior Ryan Galanie scored from third on a wild pitch to extend the lead to 12-1.

In the top of the eighth, Kamron Smith drove in two more runs with a double, plating both Pracht and infielder Daniel Brooks, who beat out an infield pinch-hit single earlier in the inning.

Mason freshman outfielder Yogie Hartigan, in his collegiate debut, led off the ninth inning with a walk and scored the final run of the game to account for the 12-4 final score.

For the Patriots Posey (0-1) allowed seven runs, six earned, on seven hits in 3.1 innings and took the loss.  Baird surrendered three runs on one hit.  Crowley allowed one run on two hits in 2.2 innings, while Barrett gave up one run on three hits in 2.0 innings.

For the Terriers, senior Josh Vitus (1-0) tossed three scoreless innings and allowed one hit to earn the win.  Freshman Coulson Buchanan gave up one run in 3.0 innings, freshman Lucas Mahlstedt gave up two runs on four hits in 2.0 innings, and junior Luke Stephens pitched a scoreless ninth.

Kamron Smith went 2-for-5 and drove in his first three runs with the Green and Gold.  Pracht finished 2-for-3 with a walk and two runs scored.  Hartigan was 2-for-3 and scored a run.

The Patriots and Terriers play the final game of the series on Sunday afternoon, with the first pitch scheduled for 1 p.m. at Russell C. King Field.
